Overview

The faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Jazeera University provides a six year program delivered in twelve semesters for undergraduate medicine leading to the award of bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). The program requires a completion of 394 credit hours in the medical schools plus one year of an internship. The program is designed to be delivered in four phases:

• General University Requirements: which is otherwise known as foundation year (Semester 1 and 2); at the first semester, students are taught basic subjects like English, Islamic studies, office application, medical physics, math, chemistry and Cell biology. The second semester, basic medical subjects are introduced including medical terminology, Anatomy and biostatistics.
• Preclinical phase: which include two years of basic medical science (Semester 3 to 6) in which important concepts of basic medical science and their correlations to clinical problems are taught through problem based learning. Medical subjects studied at this semester include Anatomy, Embryology, Histology, Physiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Immunology and Medical Genetics and Clinical and communication skills are also introduced in the preclinical period.
• Clinical phase: two years of clinical medicine (Semester 7 to 10) in which the students are taught clinical subjects and related subjects and rotate their departments. Clinical medicine subjects include Internal medicine, its subspecialties and allied subjects, Surgery, its subspecialties and allied subjects, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and gynecology, Community medicine and Radiology.
• Internship year: which the intern rotates two months in each of the six departments namely Internal medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and gynecology, Community medicine and Electives (Ophthalmology, ENT, Radiology and Laboratory).

Our faculty’s graduation competencies are based on the core entrustable professional activities developed by the association of American medical colleges. At the end of the MBBS program, the graduate shall demonstrate the following competencies.

  • Provide patient-centered care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health
  • Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and social-behavioral sciences, as well as the application of this knowledge to patient care
  • Demonstrate the ability to investigate and evaluate their care of patients, to appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and to continuously improve patient care based on constant self-evaluation and lifelong learning
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families, and health professionals
  • Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and an adherence to ethical principles
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care ( including the local Somali health guidelines and protocols), as well as the ability to call effectively on other resources in the system to provide optimal health care
  • Demonstrate the ability to engage in an interprofessional team in a manner that optimizes safe, effective patient and population-centered care
  • Demonstrate the qualities required to sustain lifelong personal and professional growth

Academic requirements

1. Applicants Should bring a copy and the original of the Ministry of Education Certificate
2. Applicant must bring either a passport or a birth certificate
3. Applicants should bring certificate of good conduct from their school.
4. Applicant must pay admission fee of $30.
5. Applicant must bring six passport size photos (6×4cm).
6. Applicants should pass the admission exam

English requirements

Successfully complete RMIT Vietnam English Advanced, or complete one of the following English proficiency tests:

  • IELTS (Academic) 6.5 (no band below 6.0)
  • TOEFL iBT 79 (with minimum score of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) 58 (no communication band below 50)
  • C1 Advanced (formerly known as Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)) or C2 Proficiency (formerly known as Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)) 176 (no less than 169 in any component)
