Land Restoration and greening Project
Jazeera University initiated a land restoration and greening project in various locations across Somalia, including Galkacayo city in Galmudug. Additionally, the university initiated “Plantation,” an initiative that involves planting fruit trees in residential areas, particularly in the capital, Mogadishu. The primary objectives of this project are to combat climate change effects through tree planting and ecosystem restoration. Trees sequester carbon dioxide, provide habitat, and improve air quality. The main strategies we follow are:
- Afforestation and Reforestation: Planting trees in deforested regions or establishing new woods can substantially enhance carbon sequestration.
- Agroforestry: Integrating trees into agricultural systems complements biodiversity, promotes soil health, and supports resilience to impacts from climate change.
- Wetland Restoration: Restoration of Wetlands Restoring wetlands can sequester carbon, improve water quality, and sustain varied biodiversity.
- Urban Greening: Urban Afforestation Establishing trees, vegetation, and green areas in urban environments mitigates heat, enhances air quality, and promotes urban biodiversity.
- Community Engagement: Engaging local communities in reforestation initiatives guarantees sustainability and enhances understanding of climate change.
- Education and advocacy: Enhancing knowledge of the significance of tree planting and conservation might motivate individuals to engage in proactive measures.
