Overview
Medical laboratory science is specialized to study the procedures and complex instruments to carry out tests on blood and body fluids that support physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment, disease monitoring and prevention. Because the tests performed are so essential in medical treatment, the medical laboratory scientist must know how to carry out these tests with scientific precision and accuracy, but also be knowledgeable in the main scientific principles and clinical significance of the results.
Students interested in specializing medical laboratory science should have ability in the sciences, particularly chemistry and biology. The principle areas of practice in the laboratory science include clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immune-haematology and immunology. In addition to the laboratory testing, a medical laboratory scientist may also supervise test quality, administer personnel, perform research and develop new tests and methodologies.
Graduate students with certified medical laboratory science have opportunity to be employed in hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and other healthcare services throughout the country.
